Detoxification

Through Proper Colon Hygiene

by Patricia Heredia, The Therapy Center
Reprinted from Quest for the Modern Active Lifestyle

The colon, or large intestine, is an organ very much neglected until trouble begins, usually first recognized as constipation or diarrhea. They symptomatic picture is often treated with over-the-counter preparations so frequently advertised on television and in magazines. This approach does nothing to get at the basic underlying cause of the problem; more importantly, allows the condition to progress and possibly cause very serious, health problems. Most serious health problems resulting from colon dysfunction take years and years to develop.

The two primary things that happen in the colon are colon stasis, the lack of good movement of material through the bowel, and putrefaction, abnormal bacteria in the bowel. Colon stasis may develop as a result of too little soluble/insoluble fiber material (roughage) in the diet. Putrefaction and abnormal bacteria result primarily from too much refined carbohydrates in the diet in the form of white sugar and flour and the extensive use of antibiotics in medicine and agriculture. We have refined away much of the nutritional value of our food supply and replaced it with artificial colorings, preservatives, flavorings, conditioners, etc. This poor quality diet combined with broad-spectrum use of antibiotics has predisposed many of us to experience a kind of internal pollution.

Internal pollution occurs when unhealthful bacteria overcome the healthful bacteria in the intestinal tract. These unhealthful bacteria release toxic by-products into our circulation which negatively impacts many aspects of our overall health.

Both of these dietary abnormalities, are the result of the increased processing of foods in our modem civilization. In some areas, which indigenous tribes maintained their native diet, the diseases such as colon cancer hardening of the arteries, heart attacks, diverticulitis/diverticulosis, hemorrhoids, varicosities, just to name a few, were rare or completely absent. These populations developed these same diseases when they began eating our processed foods. The diseases mentioned above are widespread and common in areas adhering to our westernized diet.

Avoiding Toxicity
Colon Hydrotherapy

A healthy Colon is essential to a healthy body. As we mentioned above, conventional diets comprised of refined, processed foods, high in saturated fats and low in fiber contribute to many problems associated with the large intestine. The elimination of undigested food material and other waste products are as important as the digestion and assimilation of foodstuffs. Waste material allowed to remain stagnant in the colon result in decomposition of these substances and increased bacteria and their toxins.

The colon contains the largest concentration of bacteria in the body. These bacteria provide important functions such as the synthesis of folic acid, B-vitamins and vitamin K from foods. Bacillus coli and acidophilus comprise the majority of the healthy bacteria small numbers. Waste material allowed to stagnate alters the proportion of healthy bacteria to disease producing bacteria, and potential for disease exists. These bacteria decompose proteins and carbohydrates resulting in the production of toxins. The conditions are now set for these toxins to be absorbed back into the blood stream, producing a source of disease elsewhere in the body which is auto-intoxication as mentioned above.

The purpose of the colon as an eliminative organ is to remove this waste material by mass muscular contractions called peristalsis. The effects of a stagnant colon can be manifested in the form of constipation, halitosis (bad breath), skin blemishes, headaches, low back pain, and lack of energy, to name just a few rather simple symptoms, to colon Cancer and heart disease.

Colon hydrotherapy provides therapeutic improvement of muscular tone, facilitating peristalsis and benefiting the atonic (sluggish) colon. The main functions of the colon are absorption of water and minerals, and the formation and elimination of feces.
The process of digestion from ingestion of food to defecation normally takes between twelve and twenty-four hours.

Colon hydrotherapy is the safe, gentle infusion of warm filtered water into the rectum using no chemicals or drugs. This is a restorative, painless procedure, both relaxing and effective. Colon hydrotherapy is an extended and more complete form of an enema. The enema's cleansing activity is limited to the area of the rectum and to shorter periods of time due to the body's natural wish to expel material. The colon hydrotherapy method extends beyond to cleanse the entire large intestine and offer greater cleansing and therapeutic benefits. Enemas or laxatives may precipitate dehydration in the individual, while colon hydrotherapy improves the hydration status of the individual.

In summary, good health is as much a function of our elimination status as the quality of food we ingest. Consider that over 400 million dollars are spent annually on laxatives in the United States. Every year, 140,000 Americans are diagnosed as having colon rectal cancer. Of this population, research indicates 44% will die as a result of the disease. Colon cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the US, following lung cancer in men and breast cancer in women. At least two million suffer, from colitis, ileitis, diverticulitis, and 100,000 Americans have a colostomy each year.

Periodic cleansing of the colon prevents stagnation and minimizes the exposure of potential cancer-causing agents to the colon wall. Colon hydrotherapy has a dissolving and therapeutic effect on the large intestine, whereby waste material, such as feces, gas, mucus, and toxic compounds are removed through the anus. The result is a cleaner, healthier colon and an improved overall health status.
